Two shows, two styles
Versatile guitarist and composer Tyler Phillips, the subject of the Current's December 16, 2004 cover story, "Making it up as he goes along," performs at the Cove , 606 W. Cypress, on Saturday, January 22 from 6 p.m. to midnight. On Monday, January 24, Skillet, whose record Collide has been nominated for a 2005 Grammy award for Best Rock Gospel album, will perform at San Antonio College's McAllister Auditorium. Info: 733-2147
The Texas Music Coalition holds a Songwriters Circle on Tuesday, January 25 at 7 p.m. at Borders Books & Music at the Quarry, 255 E. Basse. San Antonio band T.O.S.A. was selected as one of six finalists for the 2005 Independent Music World Series West showcase.
T.O.S.A. is a local rap duo who recorded their debut album at Rhapsody Studios in San Antonio with Grammy-nominated producer GIen Braca. The album, G.O.M.D. is slated for release early this year.
From more than 1,000 submissions, TAXI, a talent scout company, winnowed the field to 100 bands; Billboard magazine editors chose the top six groups. Finalists will perform at a music industry showcase on February 3 at 12 Galaxies in San Francisco; a compilation CD featuring the finalists' music will also be distributed to radio stations, record stores, and industry bigwigs. The winner will receive more than $35,000 in music gear and prizes.
Jazz, country, and the kitchen sink
The final weeks of the Center for Spirituality and the Arts, which is scheduled to close at the end of January, feature several musical events, including pedal steel guitarist Susan Alcorn and violinist Jane Henry on Sunday, January 23 at 7 p.m.
The Texas musicians incorporate jazz, country, and avant-garde classical styles; they will perform solo compositions and duo improvisations. The Center is located at 4707 Broadway. Info: 829-5980.
