The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
Dir. Sergio Leone; writ. Leone, Age Incrocci, Furio Scarpelli, Luciano Vincenzoni; feat. Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef, Eli Wallach (R)

The final installment in Sergio Leone's so-called "Man With No Name" trilogy, The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly is a transition between the deliciously gritty adventure of For a Few Dollars More and the epic mythology of the Once Upon a Time ( ... in the West and ... in America) films. It is less pure fun than its predecessors, but more grand - a tale in which the expected double-crossing and revenge is coupled with side journeys through Civil War history. It also famously boasts an unbeatable combination of image and music - Ennio Morricone's unforgettable themes are essential to the way Leone's iconic standoffs function. John DeFore
