Best of SA 2007

Best Sporting- Goods Store

1. Academy Sports and Outdoors
2. Soccer Locker USA
       6487 Blanco, 349-5021
3. Bass Pro Shop
       9806 IH-10 West, 877-5770,

Current readers voiced their opinion loudly on this one. Your one-stop-shop for camping, fishing, hunting, and athletic equipment for every sport imaginable, Academy is a godsend for the sports-minded and outdoors-oriented with everything from board shorts and swimsuits to batting gloves and wiffle balls. With 61 stores in Texas, Academy originated with a single store in San Antonio, spread across the southeastern U.S., and now boasts more than 90 stores in 10 states.

Best Franchise to Bring to SA

1. New Orleans Saints
2. Baseball
3. Soccer

San Antonians love their football, which explains why some combination of the Saints, the Chargers, the Patriots, and a general vote for the “the NFL” dominated the balloting. It’s worth noting, however, that at least one reader is holding out for “naked volleyball.”

Best Sports Bar

1. Fatso’s Sports Garden
       1704 Bandera, 432-0121,
2. Champps Americana
       11075 IH-10 W, 561-2833,
3. Lion & Rose Pub
      Multiple locations,

Although our editor nurses a nostalgia for the old Fatso’s that was second home to St. Mary’s grads and Missions personnel (and where she once tended bar), our readers love the latter-day satellite-TV and sand-volleyball megaplex, making it a repeat Best Of winner, as is Champps. But Lion & Rose can’t be beat for World Cup soccer.

Tim Duncan
Best Athlete

1. Tim Duncan
2. Manu Ginobli
3. Tony Parker

We all knew that the Spurs’ All-Star troika of Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, and Tony Parker would dominate this category, and the only question was how their names would be arranged. Duncan edged out Ginobili while Parker finished a somewhat distant third, which is a fair enough representation of how important they are to the team’s playoff prospects.
