Reviewing an album by the Sandworms is like describing honey without actually tasting it. More so than with other bands, you only get the full Sandworms experience by seeing them live, where they usually perform for burlesque troupes and traveling freak shows. Unlike most instrumental surf-rock bands mostly interested in grooving, the Sandworms' third album has a contrasting concept — a horror-surf trip that takes place at an (apparently) harmless circus. The 10-song journey has them (and us) encountering characters like "Cleaver The Clown" and "Lobster Boy," having a "Taste of Tarantula" and viewing "Abra Cadaver." By the time the album ends with "The Last Ticket," you're back were you started, but this time you can't help but imagine what the girls with "Switchblades & Stilettos" look like. Even though the album is full of originals, this is no groundbreaker — just a well-executed, fun, and carefully recorded album by a quartet I don't want to miss next time they play in San Anto.
