SA’s premier roots-music venue is going upscale, but the move should come without sacrificing any of its Americana earthiness.
Casbeers owners Steve Silbas and Barbara Wolfe have announced that the club-diner is opening a second location, Casbeers at the Church. The name refers to the fact that the new spot, at 1150 South Alamo in the King William District, is the site of the old Alamo Methodist Church, which was built in 1912. More recently, the building has housed the Alamo Street Theatre and The Church Bistro and Theatre.
This big development doesn’t mean the end of Casbeers’ much-loved Blanco Road locale, but its hours will be sharply reduced to lunch, Tuesday through Friday, with no live music or dinner hours.
That’s where Casbeers at the Church fits in. With a downstairs capacity of about 80, and the potential to pack twice as many people in the upstairs theater space, Casbeers at the Church should expand the venue’s live-music options and lend a touch of elegance to the South Texas alt-country experience.
Silbas and Wolfe have yet to announce an opening date for Casbeers at the Church, but it should happen within the next few weeks.
