THE SOUND & THE FURY

Ever since Snowbyrd drummer Manny Castillo underwent cancer surgery on October 20, various friends in the local music community have talked about organizing a show to benefit him. In response to these offers, Castillo, who began chemotherapy treatments on November 10, suggested that such a show should instead benefit San Anto Cultural Arts, the community organization he founded.

On Friday, November 21, Saustex Media will host a San Anto benefit, featuring Snowbyrd (with guest drummer Chris Gavito), Buttercup, two smart Austin bands — the Service Industry and the Summer Wardrobe — and “surprise guests.”

Opening the proceedings will be Dirt Road to Psychedelia, Scott Conn’s documentary examination of how hippie culture transformed Austin (and, by extension, the country) in the 1960s. Given the brown-dirt trippiness of both the Summer Wardrobe and Snowbyrd, the film should be a useful history lesson.

The all-ages show takes place at the Blue Bubble Ballroom (9315 Broadway), and kicks off at 8 p.m. Suggested donations are $6 for adults and $8 for minors. Donations can also be mailed to: San Anto Cultural Arts, 1300 Chihuahua, San Antonio, TX 78207.
