Despite its name, Uruguay nine-piece No Te Va Gustar (Spanish for “you’re not going to like it”) is one of the most interesting bands from South America. Their masterpiece, 2007’s Todo es tan inflamable (available on iTunes) is a powerful blend of rock, reggae, ska, Uruguayan murga, and killer horns. They’ll be at SXSW along with Argentina’s Banda de Turistas, Colombia’s Bambarabanda, Venezuela’s Patafunk, L.A.’s Gustavo Galindo, and Mexico’s División Minúscula on Wednesday, March 17 (Billboard.com Bungalow, 708 E. 6th St., Austin). And NTVG wants to come to San Antonio as well. Promoters and bands interested in bringing the band or opening for them should contact Gustavo Fernández at (305) 609-8105. (notevagustar.com)
Dadaist electronica anyone? Check out Switzerland’s Oy (Joy Frempong, myspace.com/oyrempong), who will be presenting her experimental album First Box, Then Walk, March 13 at the Limelight (2718 N. Saint Marys, (210) 735-7775). To make sure things stay classy and subtle, Mexicans With Guns will be there, too. — Enrique Lopetegui
