Top Chef came to San Antonio earlier this summer, but evidently didn’t get enough Big Red and barbacoa, because they were back last week. Observant foodies spotted them at the Culinary Institute of America at the Pearl Brewery holding competitive challenges. In a bizarre twist, Paul Reubens, aka Pee-wee Herman, was a part of an episode taped at the Alamo (perhaps in the basement?). The coming season is unusual in that they’re filming all over Texas, not just in one city. We know they’ve been to Dallas and Austin, and now have wrapped up their San Antonio filming. Look for familiar San Antonio locales in the next season, probably airing in October.
Speaking of Big Red and barbacoa: Vegans have a rough time finding restaurants in San Antonio that cater to their no-animal-products tastes. But there’s now a whole establishment devoted to them: Vegeria Vegan Tex-Mex and American Cuisine on Broadway in the Viva Books complex (8407 Broadway, Ste. 1). In addition to serving vegan food, smoothies, and sweets (try the oatmeal, chocolate, and cherry cookies!), they also offer vegan event catering.
