According to data provided by the Texas Education Agency, firearm incidents on school campuses have decreased precipitously since the 1999-2000 school year. San Antonio Independent School District Police Chief Jeff Ward confirms that firearms are “just something we don’t see, thankfully.”

During 1999-2000, 31 separate firearm incidents were reported at schools in Bexar and surrounding counties, while only 12 incidents marred 2003-2004, and only five firearm incidents were reported in 2007-2008.

“The high points were back in the early ’90s, during the heyday of gangs,” Ward says.

“Students want to feel that one place is secure, and that is the school,” says Ward. “They’re safer in school than in their homes.”
