WuDunn, with husband Nicholas Kristof, co-authored the remarkable book Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide. With its exposure of atrocities against women and stories of triumph and hope, Half the Sky is the definitive word on the plight of women across the world. When I found out WuDunn was speaking here, in San Antonio, I got as excited as a teenager whose crush had finally asked her for a date. (Yes, I can remember back that far) Half the Sky is one of those books I just wanted to put inside of me, so I would remember always to fight the culture of "women don't matter."Reading Half the Sky will make you sad and angry. It's sometimes hard to read. As WuDunn and Kristof make it live by telling true stories of struggling women across Asia and Africa, they also send rays of hope. Real women transition from profoundly dismal and life-threatening circumstances to hope, health and success. And, they do so with the help of amazing people who transform a desire to help into positive action. Hope abides as it is proven again and again, that investment in women and girls is the solution. "Only when women are educated and empowered will they truly be able to hold up half the sky." Planned Parenthood Trust of South Texas means to have great conversation at their annual fundraiser lunch that enlightens and energizes the importance of investing in the women and girls in San Antonio. My guess is WuDunn will utilize her global vision to generate local action. Here's how you can be a part of that experience. 2001 Annual Luncheon Hope I see you there.
