Bonehead Quote of the Week: Cynthia Dunbar on Texas Science Textbooks

Posted By on Fri, Nov 29, 2013 at 4:09 PM

In a victory for science, the Texas State Board of Education approved factually accurate science textbooks for the state's public schools last week and fended off attempts by evolution deniers to dilute the text, giving pro-science advocates a rare chance to celebrate. But the books' passage didn't please everyone, including hard right-wing former SBOE member, Cynthia Dunbar. During an appearance on Fox News, Dunbar– a creationist who once described public education as a "subtly deceptive tool of perversion"– attacked the book adoption as a form of socialized education, according to Media Matters for America.

“This is what happens when you have socialized education pushing particular viewpoints within the classroom. I know Americans are concerned about socialized health care through Obamacare but I think they need to be equally concerned about socialized education through Obamacore," said Dunbar.

Aside from the odd comparison that clearly only intends to pander to the anti-Obama viewership, the "Common Core" standards Dunbar referenced have not been adopted in Texas. In fact, Texas is one of the few states that have yet to sign on. Dunbar's caution of "indoctrination through our textbooks," and fearmongering should only serve to remind us of the damage the SBOE did to social studies education a few years ago. Dunbar, along with her political extremist cohort on the board distorted so much history, the Thomas B. Fordham Institute, a conservative think tank slapped Texas with a "D" grade for "blatant politicizing" among other serious charges. Another helpful reminder– Dunbar's reign on the board is over and her influence is (thankfully) relegated to the conservative echo chamber these days.
