Update: August 18, 2014 Marshall Naylor and Nick Joyner were two interns from the Spring and Summer sessions. Naylor carved his niche in writing about nerd culture and the swell of "nerd-cons" we've been having in San Antonio; readers went wild for his slideshow documenting the Coolest Star Wars Nerds at the SA Wookiee Walk. Naylor's weekly blogging as an intern led to freelance paid assignments like Ka-Pow! Ka-Ching!: Wizard World Socks it to SA and Comic Artist Brett Booth Talks Diversity In Comic Books. Nick Joyner, interned over the summer, and learned the ins-and-outs of Google analytics and contributed to the Current's social media feeds. His blogging highlights include Zombie!: a preview of the 13th Floor's Great Room Escape, Linklater's 'Boyhood' is Life Told Through the Small Things and San Antonio Named America’s 15th Coolest City in Forbes List.   Our original post continues:  The Current is seeking a couple of budding magical unicorns, ie. interns for digital media publishing in the editorial department. First off, know that editorial interns do not fetch coffee or run laundry errands; there is no "go-for"ing. They are never stuck with a wall of filing cabinets and a hopeless mess of alphabetizing. Janae Rice, graduated from UTSA last December; she’s one of our star interns for “Flavor.” Rice is the maven behind “10 Local Foodie Instagrams to Follow,” and she also contributed to Your A-Z Guide to San Antonio Food Trucks and 23 Margaritas to Slurp for National Margarita Day. Rice blogs regularly, and she updates the Flavor Facebook page. Intern Dustin Dooling, when he’s not assisting with fact checking and updating the Calendar,  writes the popular blog “Shot of the Week.” Current readers may also recognize Ainsley Caffrey’s byline from “Calendar Picks” and City Guide articles. And then there’s Matt Stieb, who recently came on board as the Current’s music editor, after starting out as an intern in 2012 and then writing as a freelancer. We’re now looking for digital media interns to collaborate with the Current’s website and social media channels. These interns will receive mentor-driven opportunities to work on our four online channels: news, arts, music and food. They will contribute fun and creative blogs about the news and culture that reflect their interests. They'll source photos and videos, and assemble thematic slideshows and music playlists. Interns will build a published portfolio with blogs and slideshows and gain on-the-ground experience with a 24/7 media site. Plus, they will get to peek under the hood to scrutinize the gears of the publishing platforms for sacurrent.com, and they will learn how to evaluate the site’s nitty-gritty Google Analytics. We’re looking for individuals who can commit 15-20 hours (schedule is flexible). Internships are unpaid, and currently enrolled college students are preferred. If you're interested, please send two writing samples and two social media profiles (such as Instagram, Twitter, Tumblr, etc.) to jscott@sacurrent.com.
