This screen grab from Youtube shows conservative activist James O'Keefe crossing the Rio Grande dressed as Osama bin Laden.

A controversial conservative activist filmed himself illegally crossing into Mexico and donning a mask of Osama bin Laden before illegally crossing back into the United States.

In a YouTube video published Monday, James O’Keefe, who is famous for secret recordings of democratic organizations (ACORN in 2009) and for being arrested for attempting to secretly record a Senator, has U.S. Customs and Border Protection in his crosshairs.

In the video, O’Keefe stands near a gap in the border fence and interviews Hudspeth County Sheriff Arvin West, who is famous for arresting Willie Nelson, Snoop Dogg and other celebrities for pot possession at the Sierra Blanca Border Patrol Checkpoint. Hudspeth County is just east of El Paso and Ciudad Juarez, and adjacent to the Mexican state of Chihuahua

To illustrate that the border is not secure, O’Keefe crosses the Rio Grande twice (video below).  “And I’m here today to ask you, do you feel safe,” O’Keefe rhetorically inquires, before donning the Osama bin Laden mask and crossing the river a second time.

According to O’Keefe, no Border Patrol agents could be seen for miles and he was able to walk from the banks of the Rio Grande to Interstate 10. However, O’Keefe did have the sheriff with him and it’s not clear if West accompanied him to I-10 or sanctioned his illegal crossing (both ways) of the Rio Grande.

The stunt was a Project Veritas investigation. And O’Keefe is the founder and president of Project Veritas, a nonprofit that bills itself as being an “organization dedicated to developing a national network of effective and courageous undercover citizen journalists.”

To say the least, O’Keefe and Project Veritas have numerous critics.
