Parents and supporters who want to keep Austin Academy open beyond this year will meet Thursday and have invited San Antonio Independent School District Sylvester Perez and board members to attend.

Austin Academy, which is one of the district’s 13 charter schools, has an award winning fine arts program.

The meeting will be October 16 at 7 p.m. at the Salvation Army Center of Hope at 512 W. Elmira, near the school’s campus.

Shannan Hern, whose children attend the school, said a large number of participants are expected to attend.

The Austin Academy advocates believe financially sound solutions exist to keep the school open, while SAISD officials have said declining enrollment has forced the district to consolidate schools to better manage its resources.

“This is the only school in the district focused exclusively on fine and performing arts, and that focus has brought stunning results. The truth is that closing Austin Academy is disinvestment in San Antonio’s creative culture,” Hern said.

The fine arts program, however, will be moved to Hawthorne Academy and students currently enrolled in the program will automatically transfer. An SAISD spokesperson previously told the Current that the district is considering limiting the program to fifth through eighth grade students.
