A police report reveals that two restaurant employees tackled and restrained a 27-year-old man accused of stabbing a woman who was 8-months pregnant.
The San Antonio Police Department arrested Jesse Cervantes Jr. early Monday morning on the 400 block of SW Military Drive. Cervantes is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
Cervantes allegedly approached the 30-year-old woman after overhearing her argue with her husband near the corner of South Flores Street and SW Military Drive. The woman's husband walked away from her and the 30-year-old told police she continued walking alone when the suspect showed up.
"(Cervantes) told her he understood what she was going through and wanted to walk with her," according to the police report, which explains that the woman was walking to a location that authorities redacted from the police report where she had friends, who ended up not being at the location.
"(She) stated her friends weren't at the (redacted) therefore she continued walking west on SW Military Dr and came upon (Cervantes) whom [sic] was laying down on the side walk [sic] near some bushes," the police report states.
Scary stuff. What was this guy doing on the sidewalk near some bushes? Hiding? Passing out? The police report says it's unknown whether Cervantes was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
And this is when authorities accuse Cervantes of following the 30-year-old woman, who must have been mortified and terrified. Anyone would be.
"(She) stated she told (Cervantes) to leave her alone but he continued to follow. (She) stated she remembers she was near (redacted) when (Cervantes) began 'wailing' on her," according to the police report. "(She) explained further (that Cervantes) had punched her several times on her stomach and face."
And then she saw the black Swiss-style folding knife police confiscated after arresting this guy.
"(She) stated she then discovered she had been stabbed on the stomach and was afraid because she was eight months pregnant," the police report states.
The 30-year-old woman began screaming at the top of her lungs hoping someone would hear her. And someone did. A woman and man who worked at a nearby restaurant rushed to her aid where they allegedly found Cervantes standing over the victim, who was bleeding.
Cervantes allegedly tried to run away from the good samaritans, but the male restaurant employee tackled him while his female coworker held Cervantes' arm down and "began choking him until officers arrived."
When police arrived, Cervantes was allegedly still holding the knife. Police disarmed the man and placed him in handcuffs.
The 30-year-old woman suffered a puncture wound to the lower left side of her abdomen, a laceration on the right side of her face and cuts to her mouth. Police say Cervantes, who clearly has a whopper of a black eye in his mugshot, suffered a laceration to the top of his head and bruising to his face.
Court records earlier this week indicated that Cervantes posted $100,000 bail
and was released Monday afternoon.
If we could, we'd post the whole police report. However, the San Antonio Police Department didn't approve releasing the preliminary report to the public. SAPD just provided us a copy for reference, and we have provided the entirety of the law enforcement narrative in this post.
