School officials in Odessa have learned how to make reason disappear without the help of a magical ring.
In a story where the truth is stranger than fiction, the Odessa American reports that a 9-year-old boy was suspended
for making a magical threat, err, a terroristic threat against a classmate last Friday.
The child's father, Jason Steward, told the newspaper that after watching The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies
, his son brought a ring to school and told another boy the bling could make the child disappear, just like the One Ring from J.R.R. Tolkein's fantasy novels.
Naturally, the New York Daily News reached out to Steward
, who explained how incredibly dumbfounded he is by the suspension.
"I assure you my son lacks the magical powers necessary to threaten his friend's existence," Steward told the Daily News
in an email. "If he did, I'm sure he'd bring him right back."
According to Steward, his family moved into the school district six months ago and his son has been suspended two other times, for using the word "black" to describe African Americans and for bringing The Big Book of Knowledge
, a child's encyclopedia that contained an illustration of a pregnant woman, to school, the Daily News
