Blue Bell Ice Cream has voluntarily expanded its recall to include the all of its products, the company announced yesterday evening. The decision was made after presence of the Listeria monocytogenes
bacteria were confirmed in two samples of chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream.
The Texas-based company's first-ever recall was announced in March after three deaths were linked to contaminated Blue Bell products. To date, five patients in Kansas and three in Texas tested positive for the bacteria. The presence of the bacteria has been confirmed at Blue Bell facilities in Brenham, Texas, and Broken Arrow, Oklahoma.
Initially, the recall was limited to products that were not available in retail outlets, but earlier this month the recall was expanded to include its banana pudding products. H-E-B pulled Blue Bell products from its shelves earlier this month.
“We’re committed to doing the 100 percent right thing, and the best way to do that is to take all of our products off the market until we can be confident that they are all safe,” said Paul Kruse, Blue Bell CEO and president, said in a statement.
Blue Bell, which distributes its products in 23 states, announced that, going forward, all products will be tested for contamination before being released market.
Customers are encouraged to return to the retail location to claim a full refund for purchased Blue Bell products.
