Hey, Look At This Cool Hemisfair Park Hotel That Will Never Exist

Behold this architectural rendering of a hotel in Hemisfair Park. Isn't it amazing? It's so very Shanghai meets San Antonio.

The rendering was published on the website of Gomez Vasquez International, an Mexico-based architecture firm with international offices in San Antonio and Panama City. But before you get too excited about this marvel of modern architecture — it would be built on stilts and everything — you should know that it will never, ever exist. Sorry about that.

The 5-star hotel and shopping complex could tower over the upcoming Civic Park, the second phase of the Hemisfair revitalization, which is to be located at the corners of S. Alamo and E. Market Streets. Expected to open in 2018, the Civic Park will replace the older portion of the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center with a large green, public space in the heart of Downtown San Antonio. Plans include 6 main “program areas”: the Zócalo, a main entrance plaza with cafés under shaded patios, courtyards, the Shallows for wading in, gardens, groves, and the Great Lawn which will be large enough to accommodate up to 10,000 people during Fiesta and Luminaria.

Not included in those plans is a ultra-modern hotel that would put the Grand Hyatt to shame.

Andres Andujar, CEO of the Hemisfair Park Area Redevelopment Corp., told the San Antonio Express-News that there is "zero chance" of the hotel being built.

“That’s complete speculation on their part,” he said.

Way to crush our architectural dreams, Andujar.
