I've never run a marathon. I don't think I've even run an eighth of a marathon (my sloth-like athletic ability is documented here. Things haven't improved much). So running seven marathons in seven consecutive days on seven continents sounds like a profoundly impossible feat to me.

But that's exactly what state Rep. Pat Fallon, a Republican from Denton County, intends to do later this month. Fallon will run seven marathons on seven continents over seven days as part of the World Marathon Challenge.

The first leg of the challenge will be on Saturday, January 23, when participants will run across the Union Glacier in Antarctica. The next six legs — run, of course, on consecutive days — will happen at:

-Punta Arenas, Chile

-Miami, Florida

-Madrid, Spain

Marrakech, Morocco

-Dubai, United Arab Emirates

-Sydney, Australia

“Competitors will undoubtedly suffer from marathon fatigue, jet lag and sleep deprivation as the event progresses. The impact of wide temperature fluctuations will also be a factor in success or failure, with a possible variation of 50 degrees Celsius,” a news release for the event said.

Only 11 people have ever completed the challenge. And Fallon, 48, is not an experienced runner. But he was inspired to give the event a shot after hearing the story of Jonny Wades, an 8-year-old boy from Illinois battling cancer. Wades died on Christmas Eve 2015.

Fallon thought that running the marathons could bring attention to pediatric cancer, according to The Dallas Morning News. He's using his run as a vehicle to raise money for research and awareness. He hopes to raise $77,777 for the cause. But so far, he’s only up to $17,273.13. Click here to donate.
