Going on a Cruise this Summer? Check These Tips First

Cruising has never been more popular. In 2016, at least 7 new ocean–going vessels will be launched, including the words biggest “Harmony of the Seas” with room for 5,497 passengers.

Whether you leave from Galveston or Houston, you want your much–anticipated vacation to be a happy and safe one. With recent news reports of the dreaded norovirus attacking ships as grand as the Queen Mary 2, take precautions before climbing aboard.

Stay Healthy

Do all you can to prevent catching the norovirus that causes nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Wash your hands frequently especially before eating and after using the bathroom. Avoid touching common surfaces like stair railings and elevator buttons.

Don’t touch your face, eyes, mouth and nasal areas with your hands. Apply hand sanitizer frequently – be sure to choose one that is at least 60% alcohol. Using hand sanitizer and frequent hand washing can also prevent the flu or a cold.

Bring along a supply of your medications with you. If you have any chronic conditions, take a moment to visit the Infirmary and alert the ship’s medical team.

You Can Prevent Sea Sickness

Before you leave, talk to your doctor about the benefits and side effects of products that can prevent sea sickness like over–the–counter medications or a patch that works for several days.

Non–medication options include wearing a special wrist-band that works by applying pressure on the inside of the wrist. Spend lots of time on deck and keep your eye on the horizon which can have a steadying effect.

Stay Relaxed but Alert To Stay Safe

You’re on a ship the size of a small city, so be watchful of your family and your belongings just as you would at home:

Store all valuables in your room’s safe or – better yet – leave them at home.
Don’t go overboard with alcohol as even a couple of drinks can affect your balance, judgment, behavior and concentration.
Be aware of your surroundings both on the ship and at any ports of call.
Stay with the group when ashore on excursions.
