during the primary, but this will be his first visit as the Republican nominee.
Trump is scheduled to appear at the Luedecke Arena at 7:30 p.m. next Tuesday in Austin. According to Texas Tribune reporter Patrick Svitek
Governor Greg Abbott may attend and Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick plans to attend the rally.
Trump's visit follows nasty news for his campaign in Texas, which shows him leading Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton by just six percentage points in the traditionally Republican stronghold. To be fair, though, that poll was rather unusual
in that it also compared the candidates to a 15-year-old prankster calling himself "Deez Nuts," who registered to run for president, and a dead gorilla named Harambe that was shot and killed at the Cincinnati Zoo after a small child fell into its enclosure.
But that's not the only baggage Trump will be carrying with him when he heads to Texas. His campaign underwent a major shake-up this week. Highlighting the dysfunction was the resignation of campaign manager Paul Manafort
, who called it quits in the wake of news breaking that he is tied to pro-Russian groups fighting in war-torn Ukraine
. According to the New York Times,
Trump hired the chairman of conservative firebrand Brietbart News, Stephen K. Bannon, as campaign chief, and brought in former Fox News head honcho Roger Ailes in an advisory role. Ailes resigned from Fox News after journalists Megyn Kelly, Gretchen Carlson and nearly two dozen other women accused him of sexual harassment
However, Trump won't be the only big name in politics visiting Texas next week. The Texas Tribune reports
that Bill Clinton will be in San Antonio Thursday to raise money for his wife. Earlier this month, Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Kaine visited Austin
where he held a public rally and attended a private fundraiser.
Story updated at 3:50 p.m. to include clarification that Governor Greg Abbott may attend the rally. A staffer tells us he is checking his schedule.
