So I caught Capital T's production of HUNTER GATHERERS at the Hyde Park Theater in Austin this weekend -- and it's little wonder that it's extended now for another week: this is some of the most kick-ass programming in Texas. Penned by Peter Sinn Nachtrieb, HUNTER GATHERERS is a sort of mash-up of Albee's VIRGINIA WOOLF and Ionesco's RHINOCEROS, as two mismatched couples celebrate a putatively elegant anniversary dinner located somewhere between the lofts of Manhattan and the caves of Lascaux. What begins with a ritual sacrifice of a lamb ends with a complicated--but age-old--struggle for domination and survival, laced with lacerating wit. (And the play's edginess makes Reza's GOD OF CARNAGE--which it rather resembles--seem positively prudish.) Director Mark Pickell keeps the action fast and furious, and Rebecca Robinson is a stand-out as a meek housewife who discovers her inner neanderthal.

Between BOOM and HUNTER GATHERERS, Nachtrieb is quickly catapulting himself into the ranks of America's hottest playwrights.  If you're in Austin, go see it. -- Tom Jenkins, Current Theater Critic
