The Southwest Championship, presented by Alamo Gaming

I remember back in the the 90's when I was growing up the local Blockbuster and H-E-B Video (later known as Hollywood Video) would hold gaming tournaments for the customers. Prizes would range from a free week game rental, gift card and sometimes a game and even a system if there was a sizable crowd. The feeling of the come-from-behind win, the crowd cheering when there was an epic finish, and the boos that also came from them when a player cheated or won using a cheap shot; theses were the sounds of the tournament scene, or at least what was visible to me. Now it's hard to find that same spirit of face-to-face competition in the sea of online multiplayer ... until now.

This weekend at the Texas Comic Con, local game tournament organizer Alamo Gaming will be holding San Antonio's first multi-day multi-game tournament: The Southwest Championship. Various games will be used for the tournament such as Super Street Fighter IV AE Edition, Marvel VS Capcom 3, Mortal Kombat 9, Halo 3 and Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Now this isn't your everyday run of the mill tournament where the prizes are small. Players will be able to battle for some pretty big prizes. SSFIV AE and MVC3 will both be offering a $500 guaranteed prize, which breaks down to: 1st place $350, 2nd place $100, and 3rd place $50. 1st place for Halo 3 and Brawl will each win VIBRAS Headsets provided by Track Scan.

The tournament will be held this Saturday for SSFIV AE and MVC3 and Sunday for Halo3 and Brawl. Entry fee will be $10 for each game entered and participants will need to buy a day pass for their selected game which is $15. For more information about the event and rules, head on over to  the Alamo Gaming Facebook page, the Southwest Champion event page, and Texas ComicCon website for information on the convention itself. If you think you have what it takes to win the to prize, then come on down and enter. It's time to put up or shut up and show what you're made of this weekend.
