Spurs Sparknotes, wherein DeJuan Blair doesn't sleep

Posted By on Thu, Jan 12, 2012 at 10:00 AM

  • Duncan passes Larry Legend: During the Spurs 101 - 95 overtime victory over the Houston Rockets on Wednesday night, Tim Duncan moved to 27th on the NBA’s All-Time Points List, passing Larry Bird. Duncan is now 15 points behind Gary Payton for 26th place.
  • Backcourt woes continue: Spurs backup point guard T.J. Ford will be sitting next to Manu behind the Spurs bench, missing the next four to six weeks with a longitudinal tear of his left hamstring suffered on Tuesday night against Ford's original NBA employer, the Milwaukee Bucks. In his previous seven seasons, Ford never played a full season.
  • El Jefe: After surviving amnesty talks that surrounded him during training camp, Richard Jefferson has consistently demonstrated poise in this young season from behind the 3-point arc. Jefferson currently leads the league in three-point field goals with 35, and is currently tied for third in three-point field goal percentage (.588).
  • There's no place like home: What do the Spurs have in common with the Detroit Pistons, Golden State Warriors, Milwaukee Bucks, and the Washington Wizards? Answer: All five teams have yet to win a road game. Fortunately, the Spurs are a league-best 7-0 at home. The Spurs’ next opportunity to notch that allusive road win will be on Tuesday night when the Spurs face the Miami Heat.
  • Manu's Book Club: The Spurs have gone a respectable 4-2 since Manu went down on January 2 with the fractured fifth metacarpal in his left hand. After successfully undergoing surgery, Manu is likely out the next five weeks. While reading Manu’s tweets is nowhere near as entertaining as watching him play, it’s at least entertaining. On Tuesday morning, Manu took to Twitter sharing that he was “reading a book in paper again after a couple of years (Santa’s gift) feels like watching a movie in vhs (or worse).” Last night, following the Spurs’ overtime defeat of the Rockets, Manu tweeted, “Btw, tomorrow 1 week from surgery. 4 or 5 more to come back. 15/20 more games watching!?!? smh!”
  • Does DeJuan Blair sleep?: Last season, I posted a weekly DeJuan Blair affirmation (essentially unattributed quotes), taken from his Twitter account. Based upon the time at which he sent his final tweet “last night”, DeJuan went to bed around 5 am. At one point, shown above, DeJuan tweets, “I have a sleeping coach!!! He always bench me lol!!!!” That joke is hard to follow, but most things are at 5 am.
  • At 7-4, the Spurs sit atop the Southwest Division standings, one game ahead of the defending champion Dallas Mavericks.
  • Next game: The Spurs host the reinvigorated (so far) Portland Trail Blazers on Friday night (1/13) at the AT&T Center. Tip off is scheduled for 7:30.
