Posted By on Wed, Apr 18, 2012 at 11:58 AM

This Thursday and Friday Lisa Cortez Walden directs A Tongue in the Mouth of the Dying at the Palo Alto Performing Arts Center, a theatrical presentation of poetry and prose by Laurie Ann Guerrero featuring Jesse Borrego, Selena Sue Navarro, and Monessa Esquivel, with artwork by Erick Bosse and music by the Marco Cholo Quintet. Guerrero is a creative writing instructor at Palo Alto College. Her chapbook, Babies Under The Skin was chosen for publication for the Panhandler Publishing Chapbook Award, selected by Naomi Shihab Nye.

I watched fire

those days

the men kicked

about in their boots.

I watched their boots.

I watched their boots

dance with flames—

ostrich, alligator.

I wanted to tease.

I wanted to tease fire.

I wanted to run

my finger over the fickle

head, stroke the hot

breath like a kitten’s

delicate skull.
