Stretching Your Soul
for Meaghan
On your sixth Easter, you dreamt
you were a small brown sparrow
flying through an open window
of the house that your grew up in.
Afraid to look in mirrors, you
recognized your shadow upon the
wall waiting patiently for your
return.
The moon was in your eyes;
devouring your voice, you
could not speak; but merely
looked back towards the west,
where a vagabond sun settled
among buildings huddled together
for the night. Their dreams
filled with the fading light,
an ocean within.
You stepped outside your skin.
A diamond shining in the dark;
their dark, not yours.
