Writer, playwright, filmmaker Nora Ephron, dead at 71

Posted By on Tue, Jun 26, 2012 at 10:32 PM

Norah Ephron, one of Hollywood's most successful screenwriters (Sleepless in Seattle, When Harry Met Sally, You've Got Mail) and one of the funniest, wittiest, and most lucid writers of her generation, passed away Tuesday night in New York, the victim of pneumonia. She was 71.

Even though her work in journalism and her books established her solid reputation, she also worked on TV, film (both as director and as screenwriter, for which she earned three Oscar nominations), the theater, and as a blogger. However, she's best remembered on a massive scale for writing When Harry Met Sally, one of the most popular and critically acclaimed comedies of all time.

She was nominated for a Golden Globe for the screenplay of When Harry Met Sally (1989), and also had three Oscar nominations for the screenplays of Silkwood (1983), When Harry Met Sally, and Sleepless in Seattle (1993).
