Slideshow: Planet Marfa

Posted on Tue, Jul 17, 2012 at 6:40 PM

Near the end of May, I had the good fortune to visit the high desert town of Marfa during "A Trip to the Moon: A Weekend with Aliens and Astronauts," a weekend of art viewing, sightseeing, and partying on a grand scale. Benefiting the nonprofit Ballroom Marfa (a "center for public exploration of contemporary art and culture" founded in 2003 by by Virginia Lebermann and Fairfax Dorn), the weekend culminated with a public concert by the Brazilian indie-rock band CSS, led by the highly energetic singer Lovefoxxx (born Luísa Hanaê Matsushita). Having only been there twice, I'm no authority on what makes Marfa so other-worldy, but here are a few things I do know:

The skies, buildings, and cars are nothing short of amazing...

It attracts everyone from model/DJ/fashion blogger/Teen Vogue It Girl Bip Ling to visual artist Boyd Elder, who's best known for creating some of The Eagles' most iconic album covers...

Art is literally around every corner...

Including the kind made out of straws...

It inspires people to get all dolled up...

Even in tin foil...

And everyone loves a good party.
