Pick of the Day: Hairspray

Posted on Sun, Jul 29, 2012 at 10:50 AM

As far as career validation goes, the 2002 Broadway musical adaptation of John Waters’ 1988 film Hairspray is major. Not only did it win eight Tonys, spark national tours and foreign productions, and inspire a $75 million Hollywood film starring John Travolta as a big fat woman, the blockbuster washed away a multitude of sins Baltimore’s Pope of Trash committed while making filthy depraved flicks like Female Trouble and Pink Flamingos. Stemming from an idea Waters dreamt up in his bedroom, Hairspray follows Tracy Turnblad, a chunky Baltimore teen who takes overnight TV success as a cue to racially integrate The Corny Collins Show. Decorated with cleverly pointed, feel-good songs, the play comments on the social injustices of the ’60s while celebrating women of size. Jonathan Pennington directs the plus-size musical at the Cameo. $20-$33; 3:30pm Sun, Jul 29; Cameo Theatre, 1123 E Commerce, (210) 212-5454, Check out our full online calendar of upcoming events here:
