Pick of the Day: Big K.R.I.T.

Posted on Mon, Aug 6, 2012 at 11:50 AM

Big K.I.R.T.

The early ’00s age of Southern hip-hop dominance — where it seemed every rapper with a drawl and access to a tricked out ’72 El Dorado was guaranteed a handful of hits — eventually passed about as quickly as a Georgia rainstorm. Fortunately, someone forgot to swing through Meridian, Mississippi, to tell Justin Scott, better known to the world as Big K.R.I.T. (stands for: King Remembered in Time). The rapper-producer has spent the past half-dozen years hustling his way to wide notice through a series of increasingly impressive mixtapes, eventually catching the ear of fellow Dirty South stars Ludacris and Bun B. This year saw the culmination of that climb, with K.R.I.T. dropping his long-awaited debut LP Live From the Underground. Armed with big-budget beats anchored in trunk-loads of Caddy-rattling thump, Live is K.R.I.T.’s ode to all things Southern: from grills and girls to souped-up low riders and soul food. If the album offers K.R.I.T’s high-priced bid for crossover play, his live show offers something more synonymous with his throwback style. No crews, no backing band, just K.R.I.T. and his trusty DJ at the decks. $20; all ages; doors at 8pm Mon, Aug 6; White Rabbit, 2410 N St. Mary’s, (210) 737-2221, scoremoreshows.com.
