Giant 1956

In the summer of 1955, Tinseltown invaded Marfa to start filming Texas’ own Gone with the Wind — George Stevens’ Oscar-winning adaptation of Edna Ferber’s epic novel Giant, a sweeping slice of life complete with cattle barons, nouveau riche oil tycoons, racists, and drunks. Along with a star-studded cast led by Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson, and James Dean, the production brought an army of technicians and workers to the high desert where they built the façade of a mansion to represent Reata, home to wealthy rancher Jordan “Bick” Benedict and his Maryland-bred socialite wife Leslie Lynnton. According to costar Dennis Hopper, Dean built up the courage to act the part of surly ranch hand Jett Rink opposite Taylor by urinating in front of an assembled crowd of 1,000 onlookers. Giant concludes Alamo Drafthouse and the Pearl’s interactive outdoor film series. Free; 8pm Fri, Aug 17; Pearl Brewery, 200 E Grayson, atpearl.com. Check out our full online calendar of upcoming events here: calendar.sacurrent.com.
