Pick of the Day: Champagne Champagne

Champagne Champagne

It may not go down as easy as its namesake bubbly, but the strange brew served by Seattle’s Champagne Champagne intoxicates nonetheless. Using hip-hop and synth-pop as a platform for experimentation, the trio (MCs Pearl Dragon and Sir Thomas Gray and DJ Gajamagic) rejects standard genre classification but offers up descriptors that range from the imaginable (“afrofuturistic afterparty music” and “punk-rap-shoegaze”) to the absurd (“sounds like a koala crapped a rainbow in my brain” or  “The Cure, Cody ChesnuTT and Cannibal Ox at a Pabst-soaked jam in a haunted mansion”). Seattle Weekly noted the trio “has always followed its own odd muse to unpredictable ends.” This year alone those ends include a gig opening for Wu-Tang Clan, a slot on the Vans Warped Tour, and Private Party — a seven song EP released on the French label Platinum Records. $10; 9pm Tue, Aug 21; The Korova, 107 E Martin, thekorovasa.com. Check out our full online calendar of upcoming events here: calendar.sacurrent.com.
