Pick of the Day: Old 97's Too Far To Care 15th Anniversary

Posted on Sat, Aug 25, 2012 at 11:55 AM

old 97's

It’s been almost two decades since Rhett Miller and Murry Hammond started Old 97’s, combining the Replacements’ ne’er-do-well insouciance, country-rock twang, and the hook-laden power-pop pulse of Big Star. After a couple of releases, the band enjoyed a three-album major label tenure that was followed by Miller’s stab at a solo career, two mediocre albums, and a near break up. In 2010, the Dallas quartet returned (original lineup intact) with their best music in at least a decade. The two volumes of The Grand Theatre came out in 2010 and 2011, capturing a new set of songs live in the empty theatre. There’s a taut energy and wild-eyed spirit imbuing the albums with a vibrancy long lacking. Having rediscovered their mojo, they’re reminiscing with a 15th anniversary release of 1997’s breakthrough Elektra debut, Too Far To Care. Arguably their finest disc, it’s been re-released with bonus cuts and a second disc of demos from the sessions. It’s an enjoyable collection whose spare acoustic guitar/vocals demos stand up nicely against the originals, thanks to the strength of the songs. They’ll be playing the album in its entirety, along with a set of fan favorites and a solo opening set by Miller. $25-$30; 8:30pm Sat, Aug 25; Sam's Burger Joint, 330 E Grayson, (210) 223-2830, Check out our full online calendar of upcoming events here:
