Pick of the Day: Cinema Tuesdays: The Sting

Posted on Tue, Sep 11, 2012 at 11:52 AM

Texas Public Radio's twelfth annual Cinema Tuesdays series concludes with George Roy Hill's 1973 caper The Sting, starring Paul Newman, Robert Redford, and Robert Shaw. It's 1936 in Chicago and Henry Gondoroff (Newman as an experienced con artist) and Johnny Hooker (Redford as an enthusiastic small-time swindler) combine minds to cultivate the "Big Con" to avenge the murder of a mutual friend. The $11,000 week's takes from an illegal gambling outfit run by mob boss Doyle Lonnegan (Shaw) are what the determined duo are after, and with the stakes high, it's going to take more than witty remarks and debonair antics to win the haul. The film's soundtrack, which features a number of compositions by Scott Joplin including "The Entertainer," was integral to the ragtime revival of the 1970s. $10-$12; 7:30pm Tue, Sep 11; Santikos Bijou, 4522 Fredericksburg, (210) 734-4552, Check out our full online calendar of upcoming events here:
