Pick of the Day: Síclovía

Posted on Sun, Oct 7, 2012 at 8:25 AM

Named after the Spanish word for “bike path,” Ciclovía emerged from Colombia, where cyclists and the general public have been making recreational use of closed-off city streets in Bogotá, Cali, and Medellin every Sunday since 1976. The concept has caught on slowly but surely with similar events popping up everywhere from Peru to New Zealand. Made possible by a $15.5 million grant awarded to the Metropolitan Health District, SA’s own Síclovía is an anti-obesity initiative launched in 2010. In addition to closing off four miles of streets for cycling, jogging, skating, and playing, the family-focused event connects Lion’s Field, Mahncke Park, Maverick Park, and a KLRN Kids Zone — “Reclovias” where attendees can join exercise classes and games, relax, or refuel with water and healthy concessions. Free; 10am-3pm Sun, Oct 7; Broadway between Parland and Alamo Plaza. For details and a map of the route, visit Check out our full online calendar of upcoming events here:
