Pick of the Day: Judgement Day

Posted on Tue, Oct 9, 2012 at 11:50 AM

judgement day

As far as “string metal” goes, Oakland-based trio Judgement Day owns the genre. Formed in 2002 by brothers Anton (violin) and Lewis Patzner (cello) and fully realized with the addition of drummer Jon Bush, Judgement Day went from playing the streets of Berkeley to touring with Dredg and Mates of State and collaborating with Bright Eyes and Slash. Inspired by everything from Mahavishnu Orchestra to ’70s-era psychedelic rock, the intentionally guitar-less trio funnels orchestral arrangements and vintage pedal effects into concoctions equally befitting of “an apocalyptic hoedown” (Slant Magazine) or “the perfect soundtrack to the next George Lucas film” (SF Weekly). Set to the track “Cobra Snake,” the verging-on-viral video “Violin Hero” is a perfect introduction to the band, who play the Korova Tuesday with support from The Sandworms and The Phantomatics. $6-$8; doors at 8:30pm Tue, Oct 9; The Korova, 107 E Martin, (210) 707-4521, thekorovasa.com.
