The 1966 book In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash assembled a number of semi-autobiographical short stories the late author and radio raconteur Jean Shepherd first published in Playboy. In 1983, these colorful slices of life in Hammond, Ind., were immortalized in Bob Clark’s holiday comedy A Christmas Story, starring Peter Billingsley as Ralphie Parker, a nine year-old version of Shepherd (who narrates the film to great effect). Set “amorphously” in the late ’30s/early ’40s, the storyline orbits around Ralphie’s obsession with a potentially hazardous Christmas gift (a Red Ryder BB Gun) but stirs up subplots and scenarios galore involving a “major award,” a dangerous triple-dog dare, the “Queen Mother of Dirty Words,” and a Christmas dinner of “Chinese turkey.” 502 Bar screens the Yuletide staple as part of its Movie & Popcorn Wednesday series. Free; 8pm Wed, Dec 26; 502 Bar, 502 Embassy Oaks, (210) 257-8125, 502bar.com.
