Stay Current with the Pick of the Day: "L.A./S.A." at Gravelmouth

Posted on Fri, Jan 11, 2013 at 11:50 AM

San Antonio and Los Angeles have an art connection that goes way back — it’s documented in actor and art patron Cheech Marin’s acclaimed “The Chicano Collection,” and here in Saytown in “Estampas de La Raza,” prints from the collection of Harriett and Ricardo Romo on view at the McNay till January 27. Both collections present Latino artists from the ’60s to today; many of the works are from the archives of famed L.A. collective Self Help Graphics. Curated by Gravelmouth Artspace and L.A. artist Oscar Magallanes, “L.A/S.A” pushes the momentum this Saturday with works by eight artists from the two cities, six of which are also in the “Estampas” show. For most of the artists in this new exhibition, printmaking is not their primary medium. SA artists Alex Rubio and César Martinez are each known for their exceptional painting technique, as is Jaime “Germs” Zacarias of L.A; equally renowned for his drawing and painting chops, Vincent Valdez will present his films Burn and Recuerdo; extending the collection of styles and media are L.A. artist Oscar Magallanes’ works on wood and David “Shek” Vega, director of Gracvelmouth, known for his aerosol work. Also on view are sculptural pieces by Gerardo Hacer, and serigraphs by Sonia Romero of L.A. Free; 7-10pm Sat Jan 11; Gravelmouth Artspace, 1906 S Flores, Through February 16.
