Challenged by Houghton Mifflin to write a story “first-graders can’t put down” (employing a vocabulary limited to 225 words chosen from a list of 348), Theodor Seuss Geisel reportedly spent nine months crafting The Cat in the Hat, a masterpiece about a mischievous feline who brightens a rainy day for two latchkey kids. Although she’s known for staging heavy productions of Chekhov and Dostoevsky, English director Katie Mitchell switched gears to painstakingly adapt each of the book’s 30 double-page spreads as a single scene in a one-act play that honors Seuss’ language and primary color palette. The Magik kicks off its production with a special Friday night performance offering photo ops with the Cat, Thing 1 and Thing 2, pre-show entertainment by “Alexander the Greatest,” arts and crafts, music, and more. $9-$10; 2pm Sat, Jan 12; Magik Theatre, 420 S Alamo, (210) 227-2751, Check out our full online calendar of upcoming events here:
