Stay Current with the Pick of the Day: Brahms Festival Film: Song of Love

Throughout January and February, 19 artistic partners join forces to celebrate Johann Brahms (1833-1897), the “ultimate romantic composer.” Created and curated by Sebastian Lang-Lessing and the San Antonio Symphony, Brahms Festival comprises more than 25 events including SAMA’s screening of 1947’s Song of Love. Directed by Clarence Brown, the film stars Katharine Hepburn as Clara Wieck, a young pianist who defies her father by marrying an unknown composer named Robert Schumann (Paul Henreid). Eluded by success, Schuman resorts to teaching music and begins mentoring Brahms, a promising young composer who falls for Clara. Highlighting works by both Brahms and Schumann, the film explores the complexities of love and the power of music. Current contributor Steven Kellman introduces the film and leads a discussion following the screening. Free; 6:30pm Tue, Jan 15; San Antonio Museum of Art, 200 W Jones, (210) 978-8100, samuseum.org.
