Embedded in pop culture via the sketch series Monty Python’s Flying Circus (1969-1974), the British comedy troupe Monty Python (John Cleese, Graham Chapman, Terry Jones, Michael Palin, and Eric Idle plus likeminded American Terry Gilliam) is often referred to as “The Beatles of Comedy.” In 1975, the group found their equivalent of The White Album with the feature film Monty Python and the Holy Grail. The retelling of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table was “lovingly ripped off” for the three-time Tony winner Spamalot. Classified as “scrapbook musical theater,” the medieval spoof (with a book by Idle and music by John Du Prez) follows King Arthur, his servant Patsy, and a dizzy crew of knights on a surreal quest involving a very expensive forest, a killer rabbit, and the keepers of the sacred words Ni, Peng, and Neee-Wom. $22.50-$72.50, 2pm & 7pm Sunday, The Majestic Theatre, 224 E Houston, (210) 226-3333, Check out our full online calendar of upcoming events here:
