Stay Current with the Pick of the Day: 'The Producers'

Posted By on Sun, Apr 7, 2013 at 8:30 AM

Producers

When it was released, Mel Brooks’ 1967 film The Producers ruffled feathers with its “deliberate appreciation of bad taste,” among other crimes. Deemed “amateurishly crude” by The New Yorker, the dark comedy follows a washed-up Broadway producer and his sheepish accountant as they stage Springtime for Hitler: A Gay Romp with Adolf and Eva at Berchtesgaden in a scheme of cashing in on an overfunded flop. Despite terrible actors and “the worst director in town,” the flamboyant musical becomes a must-see on Broadway. In 2001, Brooks debuted a 12-time Tony-winning musical adaptation critic Ben Brantley described as “fast, fierce, shameless, vulgar, and altogether blissful.” Vivienne Elborne directs Greg Hinojosa, Walter Songer, and Paige Blend in the Woodlawn’s production. $15-$23, 3pm Sunday, Woodlawn Theatre, 1920 Fredericksburg, (210) 267-8388, woodlawntheatre.com.
