Posted By on Tue, Apr 9, 2013 at 8:30 AM

Beyond the 1,000 works Peter P. Cecere donated to Arizona State University’s Art Museum (showcased in the 2007 exhibition “Everyday Miracles”), the collector gifted SAMA nearly 400 examples of ethnographic art. During his 25-plus years in the Foreign Service, Cecere amassed more than 12,000 pieces representing multiple cultures and illustrating a “fusion of differing beliefs.” Organized in sections (The Faces of Folk Art; The Beauty of Utility; The Shape of Belief; The Art of Diversion; and Art for the Sake of Beauty and Memory), “Pasión Popular: Spanish and Latin American Folk Art from the Cecere Collection” comprises bowls, signs, masks, toys, carousel figures, religious paintings, and other treasures the museum counts among the most important in its collection of folk art. $5-$10 (free admission from 4-9pm Tue and 10am-noon Sun), 10am-9pm Tue, Fri, Sat, 10am-6pm Sun, 10am-5pm Wed-Thur, San Antonio Museum of Art, 200 W Jones, (210) 978-8100, samuseum.org.
