On Friday, June 21 the Esperanza Peace and Justice Center will unveil San Antonio’s first Little Free Library. Located at 816 South Colorado, the Little Free Library will allow book lovers to share, swap, and borrow books for free.

Part of a worldwide movement initiated by Todd Bol, Little Free Libraries offer communities free books housed in small, handcrafted containers. Bol wanted to commemorate his mother, a teacher and book lover, by mounting a wooden container designed to look like a schoolhouse on his lawn and filled it with books for anyone to take. Bol shared his idea with his partner Rick Brooks who found efficient ways to spread the word, and the idea spread rapidly. Now Little Free Libraries exist in at least 40 states and 20 countries.

The Esperanza Center hopes to encourage members of the Westside community to contribute books to The Little Free Library for others to read. The grand opening at the Rinconcito de Esperanza will be held at 11:30 a.m. and will consist of a ribbon cutting ceremony followed by light snacks and refreshments.
