Sunday night, BBC One announced that Peter Capaldi would be the next sonic screwdriver wielding Doctor in the long running BBC series Doctor Who.

Capaldi, an admitted lifelong Doctor Who fan, is a Scottish actor who is no stranger to being called a doctor, in one form or another. American audiences may remember him most recently as a World Health Organization doctor in World War Z, and those across the pond are fond of Capaldi as a the spin-doctor Malcolm Tucker in the political comedy series The Thick of It.

During the first interview with Zoe Ball on BBC One, Capaldi recounts how he is glad to no longer keep his new role a secret.

“For a while I couldn’t tell my daughter, who would be looking on the internet and discovering that people were saying ‘so and so should be Doctor Who, and so and so should be Doctor Who’ and she was getting rather upset that they were never mentioning me,” Capaldi said.

The keen viewer may  have noticed that Capaldi already made an appearance in the Doctor Who universe. He was cast in the episode ‘The Fires of Pompeii” in 2008 alongside then Doctor, David Tennant.

Viewers will get their first fix of the twelfth Doctor in the Doctor Who Christmas Special this holiday season. The regeneration episode will be the final run for Matt Smith, who fans will be able to see again soon with Tennant, John Hurt and Jenna Coleman in the 50th Anniversary Special on November 23.

Capaldi was considered for the role once before, though ultimately lost out to Smith. It seems the time has come for an aging doctor–Capaldi is 55–as opposed to continuing the sex symbol created by Smith.

We think the choice couldn’t be better. What’s your opinion?
