"Sunset at Montmajour," by Vincent Van Gogh (1888)

A newly discovered painting by Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890), “Sunset at Montmajour,” was unveiled Monday at Amsterdam’s Van Gogh Museum, which holds the largest collection by the Dutch master.

“A discovery of this magnitude has never before occurred in the history of the Van Gogh Museum,” said museum director Axel Ruger in a statement. Based on “extensive research into style, technique, paint, canvas, the depiction, Van Gogh's letters and the provenance,” the museum attributed the painting to Van Gogh and estimates he painted it in 1888. “Sunset at Montmajour” depicts a landscape in Arles in the South of France, where Van Gogh was working at the time.

The painting will be added September 24 to the museum's ongoing “Van Gogh At Work” exhibit.
