10 Free Events Happening This Week, Dec. 2 – Dec. 8

1) Screening of "Gremlins"

Tuesday, Dec. 3    6:30 p.m


Ushering in Christmas time, Joe Dante’s 1984 legendary black comedy comes to life this Tuesday as part of the library’s Cinema Soledad series. Patrons are encouraged to bring snacks to enjoy while watching the 80’s camp horror classic.

2) Gallery sketching/art instruction

Tuesday, Dec. 3   6 p.m.

Featuring an evening of casual instruction and assistance, the San Antonio Museum of Art will offer guests the opportunity to sketch based on the museums art collection. Patrons should bring their own sketchbooks and utensils along to the event, which will convene at the front desk.

3) Shavano

Thursday, Dec. 5  10:30 p.m.

Texas indie darlings Shavano will perform a free show at The Mix on Thursday, featuring tracks “Sandia Bluff” and “Fix.” Citing Foster the People and Vampire Weekend as major musical influences, the band’s burgeoning success in the Texas music scene is something best seen to be believed.

4) Screening of "The  Nightmare Before Christmas"

Thursday, Dec. 5  10 a.m.

 

Tim Burton’s Christmas cult-classic hits the McNay on Thursday for a special screening. Part of the museum’s stop motion animation series, the event will feature snacks and a tour of original figures, props, and sets used in the beloved film.

5) Blue Star exhibit opening receptionsThursday, December 5  6 p.m.

Blue Star Contemporary Art Museum will celebrate the opening of three new exhibits with a free reception for the public. Spotlighting artists Blane De St. Croix, Elizabeth Keithline, and Chris Sauter, the event will offer light refreshments and lively discussion on the latest exhibits.

6) The Polar Express storytime event

Friday, Dec. 6   7 p.m.

All aboard the Polar Express! Packed with hands-on, family-friendly activities and classic holiday snacks, this special storytime event features a reading one of the most beloved Christmas books of all time.

7) The Danny Brooks Band

Saturday, Dec. 7  1 p.m.

Canadia-born blues ensemble The Danny Brooks Band will play a live show at Gruene Hall, packed with the powerful and gospel message for which they are known—all with a country twang. Known for being audience-friendly, the band’s powerhouse performance is not to be missed.

8) Battle of Bejar reenactment

Saturday, Dec. 7  10 a.m.

Depicting the tide-turning battle of San Antonio de Bejar, the San Antonio Living History Commission will reenact the 1835 siege on Saturday in Maverick Plaza. In addition to the detailed reenactment, the event will feature a walking tour of La Villita and its surrounding area that’s sure to please both history buffs and shopping mavens alike.

9) Tamale Fest holiday cookbook signing

Saturday, Dec. 7    1 p.m.

Held in conjunction with Tamale Fest at the Pearl, the Twig Bookshop will host three authors to discuss the art of cooking holiday classics. Dotty Griffith kicks off the afternoon will a signing of Texas Holiday Cookbook, which features truly Texan recipes including Margarita Balls and deep-fried turkeys.

10) Primer Sabado

Held the first Saturday of every month, Premier Sabado features the best local entertainment, children’s activities, and food offered by the city. The Market Square shops and restaurants will all be open for an afternoon of browsing and snacking.
