The Tobin Center for the Performing Arts, the soon-to-be center stage for San Antonio’s arts community, has unveiled its inaugural season. From comedic legend Bill Cosby to the Scottish Ballet’s “A Streetcar Named Desire,” a total of 33 productions, performance groups and artists are set to liven up the quiet, tucked-in corner of downtown where the center stands, with promise of more yet-to-be announced acts to fill out the upcoming 2014-15 season. The Tobin Center’s motto is “something for everyone,” a maxim that is evident in its diverse opening calendar, which features both virtuoso violinist Itzhak Perlman and Charles Ross, star of a one-man production of the Star Wars trilogy. Yes, a one-man performance of the Star Wars trilogy. Given that Ross is rightfully ignoring the prequels, local Star Wars fans should buy tickets as a sign of respect. There is plenty more. Public radio listeners can enjoy the sardonic monologues of David Sedaris, and an even more die-hard subset of public radio fans can delight in the wry, wistful nostalgia of A Prairie Home Companion’s Garrison Keillor. More of a public television fan? Well, America’s Test Kitchen’s Christopher Kimball will stop by the Tobin Center with food demos and insight into his popular cooking program. Meanwhile, KLRN is co-presenting “The Telling Project,” a production that aims to deepen the understanding of active duty soldiers and military veterans. The season’s line-up also features a number of acts to entice an array of musical tastes. Country music and southern rock legend Charlie Daniels takes the stage as the season opener, soon to be followed by iconic singer/songwriter Loudon Wainwright III. During the holiday season, Wynton Marsalis will accompany his Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, and R&B and gospel goddess Mavis Staples will join the Blind Boys of Alabama. The performing arts center also unveiled the Tobin Signature Series, a slate of six theatrical productions including “Jekyll and Hyde,” “Nice Work If You Can Get It,” “50! Shades! The Musical” (yes, a BDS&M musical) and “Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story,” featuring the music of, you guessed it, Buddy Holly. The Signature Series also features “Cirque Dreams - Holidaze,” which combines acrobatic spectacle with the holiday season, and “One Drop of Love,” a one-woman show produced by two men who happen to be Hollywood besties Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. The newly announced season ensures the Tobin Center’s three performance spaces, the H-E-B Performance Hall, the Alvarez Family Studio Theater and the River Walk Plaza, will be plenty busy during the upcoming artistic season. The productions are additions to a calendar that features performances from the Tobin Center’s resident arts groups, such as the San Antonio Symphony. “Putting this first season together has been like playing chess, as we have sought great variety with popular performers and productions, while working around the schedules of our ten resident companies,” said Aaron Zimmerman, director of programming and marketing for the performing arts center. AtticRep, the repertory theater company that was formerly housed at Trinity University, will end its performance hiatus with productions of “God of Carnage” and “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” this fall on the Tobin stage. Meanwhile, Ballet San Antonio, another Tobin Center resident, is set to open their season with “Dracula” in October. In all, a total of 243 total performances are scheduled for the Tobin Center’s first year of operations. Anyone interested in purchasing tickets may have to save a bit of that Fiesta money. Tickets go on sale April 26 at 10 a.m. online at tobincenter.org or by phone at (210) 223-8624.
