On May 4, the unofficial Star Wars holiday, fans of the franchise came out to walk from Hemisfair Park to the Alamo to celebrate their nerdiness in the first annual San Antonio Wookiee Walk.

Joseph Devine, the founder of Wookiee Walk, has loved nerdy things since he was a kid. He loves to get involved with groups, organizations and helping coordinate events. Out of those two loves, the Wookiee Walk was born.

Devine knows hosting a free event the entire city is invited to isn’t cheap. In turn, Devine and his team had work suffered a few sleepless nights, and even he dipped into his personal savings to finance the event.

The expense doesn’t bother him, though.

“We put this event together so we could get a bunch of nerds together.”

It doesn’t mean he wouldn’t love to do this for a living. He hopes his event planning efforts may one day be recognized by the likes of Disney.

“If we joined Disney, they could make us into a non-profit organization and we could do this around the nation it’d be a dream come true.”

Still, getting people out together to celebrate is its own reward.

“I grew up being a nerd, and I love putting smiles on everyone’s faces.”
