San Anto Cultural Arts Will Dedicate Three Murals Tonight

Three murals, three themes.

San Anto Cultural Arts will dedicate the recently installed murals at 923 South Zarzamora Street, at Colima, Thursday at 6 p.m. The event is free and there will be light refreshments.

The murals feature the urban legend of the "donkey lady," a majestic tree in the King William neighborhood and a third called “Piñata Sirena.”

Lead artists Ruth Buentello and John Medina worked with youth from SAMM Ministries, the Boys & Girls Club and youth participants in the San Anto Cultural Arts summer workshop to create the murals.

“What these three beautiful murals have in common is storytelling and a sense of place,” Pablo Miguel Martínez, executive director of San Anto Cultural Arts, said in a press release. “Like all compelling works of art, they invite the viewer into a dialogue; in this case, it’s part of the ongoing conversation around local cultures and identities.”

Buentello said the stories are part of Alamo City culture that shouldn't be forgotten.

“Working with the kids on the Donkey Lady mural taught us all that these stories say a lot about who we are,” Buentello said in a press release.

Once dedicated, San Anto Cultural Arts will get closer to a major milestone. It will create and dedicate its 50th mural since the West Side organization was founded in 1993.
